Former FC York (York United) Player,
Tom Caldwell, sets MIT record for career shutouts |
| October 14th, 2008 |
WORCESTER, Mass. -
Senior netminder
Tom Caldwell turned away four shots en route to his
Institute-record 15th career shutout as the MIT men's
soccer team edged out WPI, 1-0, in a NEWMAC contest on
Saturday evening. With the win, MIT remains unbeaten and
is now 10-0-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play while
WPI dropped to 5-4 on the year and 0-3 in NEWMAC action.
Jason Zhu knocked home a deflection with just 3:10
left in the game to help lift MIT to the dramatic
victory. The match was a tightly contested defensive
battle with WPI enjoying a small advantage in shots
(10-6) while MIT had a slight edge in corner kicks
(4-3).
Zhu's goal, his third
of the season, gave MIT its sixth straight victory. The
Engineers were ranked ninth in New England in the latest
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
regional poll and, along with defending national
champion Middlebury College, Salem State College, and
Norwich University, are just one of four undefeated
teams in the region.

Former FC York (York United)
Player plays in Germany |
| September 15th, 2008 |
| Justin Everett, a former York United
North Star player, writes of his time playing in the German Oberliga
with TSV Marktoberdorf. From
Justin:
I
will start by saying that I am currently a Junior at Caldwell College on
the Men's Intercollegiate Soccer Team. I am now 20 years old and I
began my career at the Barrens Rec Level nearly 15 years ago with my
father as my coach. I have been playing soccer in the Barrens Rec
League and Travel League since U-5 to U-14 for the Vipers under Steve
Laumann, Randy Babcock, and Cliff Everett (my father). During my first
travel soccer league, I was only 9 and played under Randy Babcock at
the U-12 level. After, the Barrens Leagues, I played for the York
United North Stars under Steve Corrieri and captained every season of
play up to U-18. During this time, I played for my High School Varisity
Team and lettered all four years. I was named captain in my Junior and
Senior years and received MVP under Dan Campasino.
Recently, I returned from Germany to play in the Oberliga (Bezirksoberliga
to be technical depending on which region your team is from) for TSV
Marktoberdorf, which is a Semi-Professional team in Marktoberdorf,
Germany. I played for the First and the Second Team under Trainer
Norbert Schmidbauer. It was an amazing experience with intenese levels
of training and match sessions. I lived in Marktoberdorf for nearly Six
Weeks (Month and a Half) and played in 10 games. I am now registered
with that team and am able to return and play, which I plan on doing in
the near future. The training sessions were rigorous with practice
three times a week if the team lost the previous match that weekend and
two times if the team won the match. The style of play was very
organized and tactical, much more so than soccer in the United States.
Therefore, with the organization came less fitness and more off the ball
movement. Either way, their fitness came from match play or playing in
the training sessions and not just running to run. The crossing and
finishing was extremely fine tuned as that is a big part of soccer at
high levels in Germany. Possession was also a key factor to my teams
success in which they finished in the top five of the league beating the
derby/rival team FC Kaufbeuren.
Soccer in Germany is a way of life, even though it has so many leagues
that offer a salary, soccer is still viewed as if money wouldn't even be
a factor as well as the politics. They play soccer to play soccer and
bring a high morale and a good team spirit for every game. |
